LED Efficacy: Its Meaning & Importance

In a market with hundreds of brands, we are often asked, “What makes your product better?” In this post, we’ll focus on one aspect – efficacy.

First, let’s define the word “efficacy” in the context of LED lighting. It is a measure of how effectively the fixture utilizes energy to produce illumination. It’s expressed in lumens per watt (lm/W). It indicates the amount of light output (lumens) generated for each unit of electrical power consumed (watts).

So why does efficacy matter?

  1. Energy efficiency. High efficacy LED fixtures consume less electrical power to produce the same amount of light compared to traditional lighting technologies, such as incandescent or fluorescent bulbs. This means lower energy bills and reduced electricity consumption, contributing to energy conservation and sustainability efforts.
  2. Environmental impact. By consuming less energy, high efficacy LED fixtures help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and lessen the strain on natural resources associated with electricity generation. This translates to a smaller carbon footprint and a cleaner, healthier environment for present and future generations.
  3. Cost savings. The energy-saving benefits of high efficacy LED fixtures result in long-term cost savings for consumers and businesses alike. While LED fixtures may have a higher upfront cost than traditional lighting options, their lower energy consumption and longer lifespan lead to significant savings over time. Reduced electricity bills and maintenance expenses.
  4. Quality of light. Efficacy also influences the quality of light produced by LED fixtures. Higher efficacy fixtures often deliver better light output, color rendering, and consistency. In turn, this enhances visual comfort and creating more inviting and productive spaces for occupants.

Efficacy & Higher Incentives

When implementing an LED project in a facility and comparing between different fixtures and brands, it’s important to compare the efficacy. Fixtures with a higher efficacy will save you more upfront and in the long run. For example, some utilities with prescriptive incentive programs, such as PSE&G New Jersey give higher incentives for fixtures with a higher lumen output. This means that if you have a fixtures with a higher efficacy, you’ll be able to take advantage of the higher incentives and offset the upfront cost, while having a lower wattage fixture for the long-term savings.
